GUWAHATI: Early property taxpayers will get a rebate of 10% on the tax from the next financial year, said Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) mayor Mrigen Sarania on Saturday while inaugurating a new bus queue shelter in the Dispur area of the city.
The mayor said the property owners who will pay the property taxes in the first two months of the next financial year, between April 1 and May 31 in the next fiscal, will get 10% rebate on property tax.
Sarania said, “Looking at the tendency of low property tax payment in the current fiscal and previous years, the corporation has come up with the decision of offering rebates to the taxpayers, who will clear their tax dues between April 1 and May 31.
Last year also, the corporation provided the facility to the residents of the city. The initiative has been taken to encourage maximum number of people to pay the taxes and thereby contribute towards the development of the city.”
In order to stop tax defaulting, earlier in February, GMC issued more than 50 warrants against tax defaulters, under which over Rs 2 crore is to be recovered as tax.
“After serving the warrants, many of them have come forward to pay the tax. Legal actions have been already initiated against the rest of the defaulters,” said Sarania.
The GMC is to set up 45 new bus queue shelters across the city at an approximate cost of Rs 3.15 crore. One of the 45 shelters was inaugurated near the Assam Secretariat in Dispur on Saturday.
The bus shelters will be equipped with two CCTV cameras ensuring the safety of the commuters, charging points, Wi-Fi connectivity, and two separate bins for segregated disposal of dry and wet wastes.
“The bus shelter will elevate the overall bus transit experience for a large number of commuters as the area receives huge passenger footfall every day,” the mayor said.
The bus shelters are being developed on public-private partnership mode. Although the private parties will be responsible for maintaining overall cleanliness and other aspects, citizens must also be responsible and refrain themselves from littering or causing any harm to the property, he added.
