Your bedroom is a sanctuary and one of the most personal spots in your home. These bedroom wall decor ideas will help you adorn the space with individuality. Wall accents are often thought of as the finishing touch to bedroom decor, but they can also become a focal point, whether you opt for vintage pieces, patterned wallpaper, or a classic gallery wall. We asked interior designers to answer common design questions and to share eye-catching bedroom wall decor ideas that will inspire you to curate your own oasis. So get your tea ready to sip and choose a good book to read—you’re about to want to spend a lot more time in your bedroom.

How should I decorate my bedroom walls?

Bedroom wall decor should blend both aesthetics and function, according to Eleanor Trepte, cofounder of Dekay & Tate, in Denver. “For instance, you may need a mirror in your bedroom, so try to choose one that injects personality and works within the overall color scheme and vibe of the space,” she says.

“A bedroom should always feel like a retreat—a place to unwind at the end of the day,” adds Bambi A’Lynn Bratton, owner and interior designer of Bambi A’Lynn Interior Design in Austin. For bedroom wall decor, that means taking a holistic approach and considering how all the design features of a space work together. “Artwork and mirrors are excellent wall decor choices, but I also love incorporating those less-expected moments of texture and pattern with wall coverings,” Bratton says.

How do I arrange bedroom wall decor?

There are a few different methods you can take to approach bedroom wall decor. Laura Williams, owner and lead designer at ATX Interior Design in Austin, suggests finding a focal point in the space and designing decor around it. “In a bedroom, that’s typically dictated by the bed location,” she says. “Once that is determined, then scale the artwork and decor from there based on bed size and wall size.”

Balance and scale are important to keep in mind, agrees interior designer Haley Straughan of Britt Design Group in Austin. In a room with short furniture, she suggests accenting with a large art piece to add height. “To add visual interest, hang something with texture or color,” she says. “For a minimalist aesthetic, install pieces that are simple and clean.”

Where should I start when choosing bedroom wall decor?

“Wall decor should be an extension of the overall design plan,” Bratton says. “Always start with the end in mind, and curate wall decor and wall covering selections to fit within that vision.”

Depending on whether you plan to add smaller accents or larger wall coverings, decor choices will be made at different stages in the bedroom design process. “Wallpaper or wall fabric selections should be made in the beginning stages,” Bratton says. These selections will inform other design choices along the way while bedroom wall art, accent pieces, and even paint colors can be chosen later to complement the pieces already in a space.
