NEW DELHI: Chief secretary Naresh Kumar has informed National Green Tribunal that of the total sewage being generated in Delhi, 82% was being treated while the remaining mostly came from unauthorised colonies. Out of 1,799 unauthorised colonies in Delhi, 1,031 are connected to sewage treatment plants and 296 colonies will be connected by Nov this year.

“Of the total 1,799 unauthorised colonies in Delhi, sewer lines were laid and commissioned in 747 colonies for treatment of sewage in STPs or decentralised sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) in Jan 2023. During the last one year, sewerage network was provided to 284 more unauthorised colonies, and now, 1,031 out of total 1,799 unauthorised colonies in Delhi have sewerage network. The work of providing sewerage network in remaining 768 unauthorised colonies is at various stages,” said the chief secretary in a report submitted to NGT.

According to the report, the high-level committee for rejuvenation of the Yamuna took up the matter of unauthorised colonies not connected to the sewage network.

“At a meeting on Jan 10, it directed DDA to provide status in respect of four unauthorised colonies falling under ‘o zone’ to DJB. DJB to expedite the laying of sewerage network in remaining unauthorised colonies, including five colonies for which NOC has been issued by the forest department; one colony for which ASI has given the permission; three colonies for which it was informed that they don’t fall under the jurisdiction of ASI; and 22 colonies traced by DJB,” said the report.

The committee asked DJB to provide a report on how sewage from 12 unauthorised colonies, in which providing a sewerage system is not feasible, would be dealt with.
