BHOPAL: In an extensive exercise, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) now seeks urban redevelopment in the state capital through slum rehabilitation with private participation under the PPP-mode.

The estimated target population of the survey is around 5 lakh. Prominent slums of the Bhopal located in over 650 acres will come under the purview of the project.

To these ends, a socio-economic survey of slums and provision of community support services for implementing the ‘Jhuggi Mukt Bhopal’ scheme has been sanctioned by the BMC.

The project targets the urban poor, including slum dwellers, and aims to rehabilitate these communities by utilising land resources and engaging private developers through PPP-mode.

Once the identification process concludes, the slum land shall be monetised. Several slums are situated near prime locations.

Private developers will transform the slum by constructing new housing for the slum dwellers and creating commercial spaces for project viability.

“The project encompasses long-term urban planning and socio-economic growth initiatives within Bhopal, covering approximately 388 slums and over 1.5 lakh households,” said BMC additional commissioner, Nidhi Singh.

The initial phase of the project involves conducting software-based socio-economic surveys, including MIS entry of households in identified slums.

During the development phase, the private developer shall bear the expenses related to housing provisions of the displaced, offering support for transition and rehabilitation where necessary.
