BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has achieved 83 per cent of its property tax collection target for the 2024-25 fiscal year, with over two and a half months still remaining. Notably, the BBMP had set a goal of Rs 5,210 crore for property tax collection this fiscal year. The Palike has already collected Rs 4,370 crore.
What led to this speedy success?

A BBMP official said, “This significant milestone is attributed to various measures, including the successful implementation of the One-Time Settlement (OTS) Scheme, which concluded in late November and brought long-pending taxpayers under the tax net.

Currently, the weekly tax collection stands at Rs 10-13 crore, driven by revenue officers assigned specific weekly targets to ensure steady progress.”

Addressing tax defaulters

BBMP officials said that to address tax defaults, notices have been issued to property owners with pending dues, and commercial buildings with significant arrears are being seized. BBMP aims to collect an additional Rs 500 crore by the end of March to meet its annual target.

“This year’s collection marks a significant improvement compared to the same period last year, with Rs 900 crore more collected. By this time in 2023, BBMP had collected Rs 3,480 crore, while the current figure stands at Rs 4,370 crore,” an official added.

Zone-wise tax collection data

Among the BBMP zones, Mahadevapura leads with Rs 1,169 crore collected, achieving 89.36 per cent of its target, followed by Yelahanka with Rs 422 crore at 94.95 per cent. Other zones, including West, South, Bommanahalli, RR Nagar, East, and Dasarahalli, have also shown consistent progress, with collection percentages ranging from 73.84 per cent to 84.87 per cent.
