BENGALURU: BBMP has decided to initiate the process to auction 608 properties with huge tax arrears in its eight zones.
The 608 properties include 118 in east zone, 120 in west, 109 in south, 60 in Mahadevapura, 70 in Bommanahalli, 40 in Yelahanka, 50 in RR Nagar and 41 in Dasarahalli. BBMP officials said tax dues from these properties add to nearly Rs 20 crore.
The action against 608 properties comes in the wake of BBMP successfully cracking the auction whip. The civic body had earlier announced that six properties with tax arrears would be auctioned in Feb first week. Sources said owners of four of these properties cleared dues amounting to about Rs 1 crore.
“In addition to physical notices, BBMP has decided to send auction alerts via SMS to the registered mobile numbers of property owners. Each of the 64 revenue sub-divisions, which include 3-4 wards, will serve auction notices on 10 defaulters with the highest arrears,” sources added.
Currently, nearly 2 lakh owners owe Rs 400 crore in unpaid property taxes. Until now, BBMP focused only on seizing commercial buildings to recover dues. However, as per regulations, any type of property can be auctioned if taxes remain unpaid.
