KOLKATA: A week after forming inspection teams for each of the six borough areas, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified about 20 fresh illegal buildings, mostly in Rajarhat-Gopalpur and in areas bordering the East Kolkata Wetlands. The civic body has written to the Bidhannagar Police commissionerate, asking for assistance to take up a demolition drive to dismantle the under-construction structures at one go.

Officials said the civic teams were conducting inspections following complaints. “Around two to three fresh unauthorised structures and constructions have been identified from each of the six boroughs. Most of them are detected in pockets of wards 1 to 28 which cover Rajarhat-Gopalpur area and in wards 35 and 36 which border the wetland area. We are regularly issuing stop-work notices for under-construction structures and FIRs are being lodged for not paying heed to the notices,” said an official.

Officials said they have sought cop help for taking up demolition drives. “A letter has been sent to the police to raze the structures at one go,” said an official. In the past nine months, BMC has issued a total of 174 stop-work orders and lodged 30 FIRs against illegal constructions mostly in Rajarhat-Gopalpur area for violating stop-work notice.

The authorities have been trying to conduct demolition drives for unauthorised buildings but are facing strong resistance from locals in many cases.
