BENGALURU: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has awarded M Venkata Rao Infra Projects Private Limited a contract worth Rs 48.62 crore to extend the purple line of the metro further from the Whitefield (Kadugodi) metro station. The extension will not house any new stations and spans only 588 metres.

The objective is to improve train operations by providing a train reversal crossover-track facility. The contract also includes building a 28 metre extension of the under construction Whitefield Depot’s third line. Both this and Reach 1B’s mainline were built by ITD Cementation India Limited.

The corporation had invited bids for the project in October last year with a Rs 42.30 crore estimate and 18 month completion deadline. Now, the extension of the 73.92 km Bangalore Metro Phase 2 project’s Reach 1B will take the Purple Line across the Indian Railways’ Bengaluru – Chennai line and up to Belathur Colony on Whitefield – Hoskote Road.

At present, trains at the Whitefield (Kadugodi) station are using only one platform to serve passengers. Since the line ends 14 metres north of the station, incoming trains are required to slow down to a designated slower speed. Once the extension is in place, it will allow the corporation to run high frequency train operations smoothly.
