PUNE: A 32-year-old builder from Naigaon in Haveli taluka lost Rs 8.66 lakh after cybercrooks posed as officials from a prominent investment banking company and lured the man to invest in their company’s fund for good returns between June and July last year.

He filed a complaint application with the cybercrime police. After preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Uruli Kanchan police on Wednesday.

An officer from the Pune Rural police said that in April last year, the builder received a link to the prominent investment banking company on his cellphone. When he clicked that link, he was added to a group of investors on a mobile messenger app.

The officer said until June last year, the complainant received online training about the investments. He also downloaded an app to make the investments. “When the company’s executives started requesting him to start investments, the complainant told them to share the company’s Sebi registration number. After verifying the registration number online, the builder decided to start investments,” he said.

The investigating officer said in July last year, the builder transferred Rs8.66 lakh to the different bank account numbers provided to him.
