BHOPAL: Local bodies in Madhya Pradesh have been empowered and are effectively utilising their rights and powers to carry out public welfare work, said chief minister Mohan Yadav on Monday citing the recent success of ‘Mukhya Mantri Jankalyan Abhiyan‘ as a prime example of this progress.
Explaining that the importance of urban bodies financial independence, the chief minister said, development can be given new momentum with economic self-reliance of urban bodies.
Yadav was virtually addressing a meeting of All India Council of Mayors Madhya Pradesh unit in Indore, from Gwalior. During his address, Yadav praised the civic bodies of the state for establishing a unique identity in the country through their development efforts.
He highlighted the rapid pace of holistic development in urban areas across Madhya Pradesh. He specifically commended the Indore Municipal Corporation for its outstanding performance in the field of cleanliness. Indore has consistently ranked at the top in the country for cleanliness over the past seven years, and this year, the city continues its strong efforts to maintain its top position. Indore has brought pride to the state.
The chief minister said that urban bodies could also create and implement housing schemes similar to those managed by development authorities.
Urban housing and development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said following the 73rd and 74th amendments of the constitution, the local bodies in Madhya Pradesh have been granted maximum possible rights. He emphasised that the goal is to further decentralise the local governance system and ensure these bodies receive maximum rights. He urged local bodies to strive for self-reliance by strengthening their taxation systems and exploring new sources of income.
Indore mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav said that new dimensions of development were being established in Indore under the leadership of chief minister Mohan Yadav. He said that Indore city was progressing rapidly in the field of development. Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar and BJP state president VD Sharma also participated virtually in the event.
