Maharashtra minister urges Mhada to accelerate affordable housing initiatives, ET RealEstate

NAGPUR: Amid rising housing demand in Vidarbha due to industrial expansion and Mihan-driven employment, minister of state for housing Pankaj Bhoyar directed Mhada officials to fast-track affordable housing projects for all income groups.

Chairing a review meeting in Nagpur on Thursday, Bhoyar stressed the redevelopment of old buildings, transparent execution of schemes, and strategic planning to integrate commercial hubs with residential projects for economic viability. The minister emphasised the need for strategic planning to ensure housing accessibility for all sections of society.

In some cities, including Hinganghat, houses constructed under Mhada projects remain unoccupied. Bhoyar proposed that these houses be allocated to the police department, instructing officials to coordinate in this regard and submit a formal proposal. He also stressed the importance of maintaining transparency in Mhada’s projects while ensuring quality work in three key areas — redevelopment of old buildings, development of affordable housing, and implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Many Mhada schemes in metropolitan areas were initiated long ago, with several now in a deteriorated state. Bhoyar highlighted the need for redevelopment, suggesting a mixed-use approach that integrates business establishments within residential projects to boost economic viability and job creation.

During the meeting, chief engineer Mahesh Meghwale provided updates on Mhada’s ongoing projects, including the textile commercial complex at the Empress Mill site in Nagpur and various housing schemes in Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur. He also reviewed the status of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the New Chandrapur Housing Scheme for Industrial Workers, and the construction of commercial shops and a new administrative building.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has prioritised housing for senior citizens under the state’s 100-day initiative, along with implementing an e-office system to enhance transparency in housing schemes. Chief officer Mahesh Kumar Meghmale, executive engineer Renuka Avtade, deputy chief officer (Vigilance) Gole, and other senior officials were present during the meeting.
