KOCHI: The Kerala finance Budget 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal, promises special focus on Metro rail projects in Kochi, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram cities.
In his budget speech, the Minister said the existing Kochi Metro line would be extended to more areas in the city, and the proposed Metro projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram would become a reality soon.
Kochi Metro has already started its Phase II Pink Line project works, which require increased fund allocation this year. However, the Metro projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram are still in the nascent stage.
In his speech, the Minister also said that the government would go ahead with the proposed high-speed rail project. The SilverLine semi high-speed rail project still faces uncertainty, as the Centre has suggested major modifications to the DPR, with the state government yet to take a call on it.
The Minister also said that the construction of 150 bridges across the state would be completed soon.
The budget also earmarked funds for the development of ports and highways in the state.
Last year’s budget focused significantly on infrastructure projects, with special packages for SilverLine, Kochi Metro, roads, and highways. While some projects progressed, many are yet to commence.
Infrastructure projects across the state were expected to receive major allocations this time. However, the Minister did not make any major announcements regarding fund allocation in his speech.
As much as Rs 39.20 crore was earmarked last year for the comprehensive infrastructure development of Azhikkal, Beypore, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ponnani ports, emphasizing cargo, passenger transportation, and tourism. However, the port development projects are yet to take off.
