MOHALI: Finally taking action against illegal construction in New Chandigarh, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) on Monday fixed notices on 15 to 20 under-construction buildings, both residential and commercial, at Mullanpur, Siswan, Kubaheri, and Majra villages.

Notably, the notices were posted on structures that were already more than halfway built. The GMADA had earlier turned a blind eye when the foundations for these buildings were being dug.

GMADA junior engineer (JE) Kushal Sharma said, “The issue of illegal construction was presented beofre the higher authorities, and after getting approval from them, notices were issued to such building owners. If they fail to provide the requisite clearances approving the construction, we will demolish such buildings.”

The JE said more notices would be issued to other such buildings being constructed illegally on govt land without getting approvals. He mentioned that many such buildings were being constructed on land where construction was not allowed.

Notably, illegal construction is rampant in the Mullanpur area, largely going unchecked by the authorities. Residents have raised concerns about illegal constructions by builders and private individuals, but action has been delayed, resulting in significant losses to the govt exchequer.
