ULHASNAGAR: Even after the implementation of the Abhay Yojana scheme by the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) for property tax holders in the city who did not pay tax for years, giving them a 100% discount on late payment fees on actual tax, many property holders in the city still did not pay their tax.

In such a situation, the UMC decided to take action against these individuals. As a first step, they put up a list of the 100 biggest property tax defaulters in the city. The 100 property tax defaulters include property owned by some politicians and prominent builders from the city.

The property tax of these 100 defaulters is pending in lakhs, and the municipal corporation appealed to them to pay the tax. If they do not do so, in the coming time, they decided to take action to seize the property and auction it.

According to UMC’s Tax Assessor Nilam Kadam, “There are a total of 1,83,550 properties in the UMC limit, out of which there are a total of 1,36,543 residential properties, while 47,007 commercial properties are included. Accordingly, the total demand in the financial year 2024-25 is Rs 951 crore (arrears Rs 833.30 crore + current Rs 117.80 crore), and the recovery till March 22 this year is Rs 126 crore, and still, an amount of Rs 824.90 crore is pending.”

The UMC officials said that property tax collection is an important source of financial income for any civic body. For this, the Abhay Yojana was implemented from February 25, 2025, to March 22, 2025, for those who did not pay their property taxes for years, giving them relief from 50% to 100% on late payment charges.

Kadam further said, “For this purpose, public awareness was created on a large scale through various media. However, some property owners are repeatedly ignoring the payment of their property tax. Therefore, the list of the first 100 irresponsible tax defaulters who did not pay their taxes despite repeated appeals has been published on notice boards at various places.”

The tax department appealed to the citizens of the city to pay their outstanding property tax as soon as possible and avoid further unpleasant action by the municipal corporation.
