KOLHAPUR: The special economic zone (SEZ) in Phaltan tehsil of Satara district has now been fully denotified by a gazette issued by Central govt on Sept 11.

Around 101.25 hectares of land from Survadi and Nandal villages of Phaltan had been notified as an SEZ for the engineering sector in 2010, with an aim to facilitate concessions for industry and boost foreign investment and jobs.

According to an MIDC official, 48.17 hectares of this land were denotified earlier, in 2017.

“Units of an industrial conglomerate are located in the remaining land area of 53.08 hectares. The conglomerate decided to de-bond from the SEZ and operate as a domestic tariff area (DTA), under which duty-free compliance is not required, but there are some other regulations that the industries must adhere to,” said the senior MIDC official, requesting anonymity.

The official added, “Therefore, we proposed denotification of the SEZ in its entirety and accordingly, Centre issued the gazette this week.”

However, Centre has directed state govt to develop infrastructure in the denotified area, which will sub-serve the cause of an SEZ. State govt has also been directed to conform to existing land use guidelines in the zone.

The MIDC official also told TOI, “Denotification of the SEZ does not impact industrial operations, which will continue here.”
