COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation has begun demolition of buildings that were built encroaching on the Kannapiran Mills Road in ward 50.

Thirteen houses were demolished on Monday. “The remaining houses have sought time till April end citing the ongoing examination of their children,” a senior official said.

A stretch of nearly 200 metres of the 40 feet road had been encroached on by 30 families for almost 25 years. The encroachment shrunk the road to a nearly 25 feet road in this stretch.

Residents from areas like Masakalipalaym, Sowripalayam and Annamalainagar use the Kannapiran Mills Road that connects Sowripalayam Road with the Trichy Road. Commuters on the Udayampalaym Rain Road, Sowriplayam Main Road and Peelamedu Road use this link road to avoid traffic congestion during peak hours.

In 2023, the corporation issued an eviction notice to the encroachers. A few of them vacated their houses. However, the corporation had failed to evict the remaining encroachers.

Recently, eviction notices for about nine houses were issued on the directions of corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran who had conducted an inspection of the road.

The corporation officer said, “Those who received pattas for the plots allocated to them vacated their houses on the road. However, pattas should be issued to two more families. Two other families are not satisfied with the plots allocated to them. Hence an alternative is being prepared. All these processes will be completed by April, and the entire road will be retrieved to 40 feet shortly.”
