GURUGRAM: Over the past 24 hours, MCG imposed 54 challans for violations of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) regulations. The total penalties levied amount to Rs 3.4 lakh. Of this, Rs 1.4 lakh (41% of the penalty amount) was issued for carrying out construction activities, a major GRAP violation, especially when the air quality is consistently deteriorating.

MCG joint commissioner Pradeep Kumar visited various areas to inspect compliance with GRAP regulations. He warned of fines and serious action if any activity banned under GRAP-4 regulations began or continued. He also instructed officials to ensure regular garbage collection and improve the cleanliness of the areas.

“From utilising anti-smog guns to continuously spraying treated water from sewage treatment plants on roads and trees, we are taking serious action to comply with GRAP-4. A total of 16 machines are operating on various roads at night to prevent dust from rising and contributing to smog formation. Fines are also being issued to those who violate GRAP regulations,” said MCG commissioner Ashok Kumar Garg.

The residents, however, pointed out that the MCG should increase its surveillance to check the construction activities going on despite the ban under GRAP. On Tuesday, MCG teams stopped the construction ban in New Palam Vihar and Sun City.

“Current financial penalties prove inadequate to deter property developers and homeowners from proceeding with construction. While citizens struggle with poor air quality, these construction activities persist, contributing further to the pollution levels,” said Ajay Mehta, resident, Sector 51.
