AHMEDABAD: A city sessions court on Wednesday denied anticipatory bail to Popular Builders‘ owner, Raman Patel, in connection with a new criminal case lodged against him and seven others for buying a land parcel in Makarba by allegedly forging documents nearly four decades ago.
CID (Crime) registered a complaint from one Kanu Thakor in Aug 2024, claiming that his ancestral land was illegally purchased by the accused persons using forged documents involving his grandmother in 1986 when, in fact, his grandmother died in 1980.
Patel and others, including the current chairman of Ambika Darshan co-op housing society, have been charged with criminal conspiracy and forgery for creating a bogus death certificate and forging the thumb impression of the woman. Patel, who was behind bars for four years in connection with various criminal cases, approached the court seeking protection from possible arrest.
Public prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt opposed Patel’s plea, citing eight criminal cases registered against him, including one filed by his daughter-in-law accusing him and others of attempted murder.
Additional sessions judge J I Patel rejected the anticipatory bail plea and stated, “Considering overall facts and circumstances of the case, at this stage, for proper investigation in the matter, the presence of the present applicant during the police investigation/custodial interrogation is very material in the matter. Hence, after considering overall facts and circumstances of the case, at this juncture, I am of the view that this is not a fit case to use the discretionary power of this court in favour of the present applicant to enlarge him on anticipatory bail.”
