HYDERABAD: The fate of 30,000 double bedroom houses in the city remains uncertain with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) awaiting Rs 1,500 crore funding to complete the pending works.
As these 2-BHK houses were launched in the previous government’s tenure, the GHMC is in a dilemma over taking up construction works for 30,000 plus units until the new government sanctions the budget to resume the activity. While some of these 2-BHKs were just 10% constructed, a few of them were near completion.
The previous government formulated the double-bedroom housing scheme in 2015, with a view to provide dignity housing to the poor, by giving 100% subsidised housing. The BRS government had promised to allot 1 lakh units for the poor in 111 different areas in Greater Hyderabad.
68,800 Two-BHKs distributed
“We have completed and distributed nearly 68,841 2-BHKs to the beneficiaries. However, works for the remaining 31,000 units were put on hold for the last one and half years. So far, nearly Rs7,000 crore were spent on the construction of double bedroom houses and once the government releases Rs1,500 crore, we will resume the work. We also need to get Rs400 crore towards pending bills from the government,” said a senior official in GHMC.
GHMC has distributed double bedroom houses in several localities across the city including — Kollur, Cherlapally, Ameenpur, Bahadurpally, Dundigal, Narsingi, Shankarpalli, Nallagandla, Muraharipalli, Chaitanyanagar, Rampally and Thumukunta.
The scheme was launched to fulfil the objective of the government in providing pucca houses to all eligible BPL families without houses. With regard to allotments in urban areas like GHMC — SC category has been provided 17% reservation, ST 6%, minorities 12% and others 65%.
TV, cable & internet facilities
Meanwhile, GHMC invited tenders from service providers for providing internet/ broadband and cable TV services for the two 2 BHK projects of GHMC in various locations. Interested service providers should have experience of providing similar nature services for each 2-BHK (each household is considered as one connection).
For 2-BHK houses constructed at in-situ locations, internet/ broadband and cable TV services are available through existing service providers as they are located within GHMC area. However, in case of 2 BHKs outside GHMC limits, they need to be provided with the infrastructure for services such as internet/ broadband and cable TV.
