KOLKATA: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to introduce the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) as an additional payment mode option for taxpayers to pay property tax bills, apart from the existing online and offline modes, from the coming financial year starting from April 1.

“The civic body wants to introduce BBPS to bring more convenience to taxpayers, allowing them to pay their property tax through a mobile app. The process to tie up with a bank has been initiated for the system to be introduced,” said a BMC official.

Presently, taxpayers in the BMC area pay taxes either through debit or credit cards and internet banking or through an offline process by physically visiting the designated bank branches, where the tax is paid using cash, cheque, or demand draft.

The civic body aims to earn more revenue from property tax collection. The authorities increased property tax collection estimates from Rs 40 crore last year to Rs 44 crore for the coming financial year.

BMC is also working on the process to introduce a Unit Area Assessment (UAA) system of property tax collection to have a uniform tax structure for all its 41 wards.
