GURUGRAM: GMRL is trying to reach a settlement with the owners of three houses, two of them in Sector 4 and a third in Sector 9, which fall on the alignment of the route planned for the Millennium City Centre-Cyber City metro corridor.

Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) officials told TOI on Friday that they want to avoid getting hold of the three plots through the land acquisition process as it would likely delay work on the new corridor. Instead, the agency is trying to purchase the houses at market rates.

The owners last month met CM Nayab Singh Saini and submitted a letter, seeking plots in Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) areas as compensation for giving their land to GMRL.

Officials said homeowners‘ request was under consideration, and a decision is expected to be taken in the next two weeks.

“We have prepared the environmental and social impact reports, in which some private properties are falling in the metro’s alignment. While acquisition is an option, it would cause delays. We have met the homeowners and are working towards a settlement. We are finalising the alignment and aim to proceed without disruptions,” a GMRL official said.

The 28.8km corridor, with 27 elevated stations, will be built on a budget of Rs 5,452 crore. Last month, CM Saini announced that construction work on the corridor will begin on May 1 and work will take four years to be completed. The final survey started last week and the general consultant for metro construction is expected to be appointed soon. The tender for the Millennium City Centre-to-Sector 9 stretch will be issued by the end of Jan, and the Sector 9-to-Cyber City stretch in Feb.

Public transportation in Gurgaon has barely seen any change, even though the city’s population and reputation as a hub of corporate and IT firms have rapidly grown over the years. Currently, the city has 17 km of metro line — 5.3 km of the Delhi Metro’s yellow line and 11.7 km of Rapid Metro.

The last expansion was in 2017, when the Rapid Metro, which connects Cyber City and almost the entire length of Golf Course Road, opened to commuters in its entirety. The Union Cabinet in June 2023 approved the new line, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the corridor in February this year.
