PANAJI: Govt demolished additional illegal structures and homes built after encroaching on land acquired at Cunchelim-Bardez for a multi-religious burial ground.

Govt had demolished some homes in Nov, with the remaining likely to face the axe in the coming days. The occupants of the illegal structures were asked to vacate their homes.

The occupants of as many as 140 houses built on the land owned by the Cunchelim comunidade face demolition following a survey by the directorate of settlement and land records that found the land was encroached upon.

The land, worth Rs 11 crore, was acquired for the crematorium for three communities by the North Goa Planning and Development Authority (NGPDA).

Authorities deployed heavy machinery to demolish the houses, with former residents of the homes watching in dismay. The Bardez mamlatdar, police personnel, and local authorities were present to monitor the demolition.
