PANAJI: Starting Dec 1, homeowners in Goa will be fined Rs 10,000 if they fail to verify their tenants, as per the Tenant Verification Act. “Govt of Goa hereby appoints the 1st day of Dec 2024 as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” states a notification issued by the home department.

Residents of other states who moved to Goa were found to be involved in crimes in the state, from petty theft to a series of murders, prompting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to direct the police to commence verification of those living on rent.

Sawant said that the stringent verification norms are for the benefit of the people.

Since Sep, police have been conducting a special verification drive across the state, scrutinising credentials of around 2 lakh tenants.
