GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat govt is in the process of preparing master plans to protect the 23 eco-sensitive zones (ESZ) in the state. These master plans are expected to be announced shortly and will focus on sustainable development practices while ensuring the protection of wildlife corridors and natural habitats.

“The state’s robust network of protected areas requires careful management to balance development with ecological preservation. Govt’s initiative to regulate ESZs through comprehensive master plans will be a big step towards environment conservation,” top sources in the govt said.

These zonal master plans will outline specific guidelines for different activities within the ESZs. The plans will focus on sustainable development practices while ensuring the protection of wildlife corridors and natural habitats. “Local communities within 771 villages that fall under these ESZs will need to adapt to new regulations concerning construction, agriculture and other economic activities,” sources said.

The preparation and implementation process will involve consultation with local stakeholders, including village panchayats, forest officials and environmental experts. The master plans will establish clear boundaries for various activities, considering both ecological sensitivity and local livelihood needs, officials said.

Key components of these master plans include detailed mapping of ecological resources, issuing guidelines for sustainable tourism, introducing waste management protocols and ensuring water conservation measures. The master plans will also have components like regulations for construction activities, agricultural practice and wildlife protection measures.

“The state govt is working to create a balance between conservation needs and local development aspirations. This includes providing alternative livelihood options for communities affected by ESZ regulations. The plans will also address issues such as human-wildlife conflict management and eco-tourism development,” officials said.

District-level committees will be formed to oversee compliance with ESZ guidelines and ensure effective implementation and monitoring of the plans. Govt sources said the initiative faces challenges, particularly in areas like Gir where local communities have expressed concerns about restrictions on development activities.
