LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) recorded an impressive house tax collection of over Rs 2 crore within just a few hours of reopening its online payment portal for the financial year 2025-2026.
According to LMC officials, the website was opened for a limited time on Saturday afternoon, during which more than 8,000 citizens paid their house tax online. The overwhelming response was attributed to a 10% discount offered on digital payments—a move that seems to have struck the right chord with taxpayers.
Municipal commissioner Inderjit Singh called the response “encouraging,” highlighting a growing trust in digital governance.
“The citizens of Lucknow have shown great responsibility, and this positive trend in tax payments will directly reflect in the city’s development. The revenue collected will be reinvested in improving roads, sanitation, water supply and other essential civic services.”
Even during a short maintenance period on Friday evening, the LMC collected Rs 9 lakh, signalling a positive outlook for the year ahead.
Targeted WhatsApp and SMS alerts sent to property owners spurred the surge, with over 6,000 of them paying their dues shortly after receiving the messages. The official website—lmc.up.nic.in—will be fully functional for public access from April 7, with the online discount available till April 31.
To ensure inclusivity, the LMC is also offering an 8% discount at zonal offices for those opting for cash payments. Other available payment methods include cheques, Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), and in-person payments at HDFC and Axis Bank branches.
Citizens receiving payment links via WhatsApp or SMS can pay instantly by clicking “Pay Now,” verifying property details, selecting a payment mode (Net Banking, UPI, or cards), and downloading the receipt.
Chief tax officer Ashok Singh said, “Our digital platform offers 24/7 access, instant receipts and eco-friendly convenience. It saves time, reduces office visits, and promotes transparency. We urge citizens to adopt it and help build a smarter, cleaner Lucknow.”
