HYDERABAD: A 40-km Metro Rail line will connect the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to the proposed ‘Fourth City’ in Mucherla, Metro officials said on Sunday while releasing the detailed phase 2 plan of the project. The plan has also revised the alignment of the airport metro, which will now go via Aramghar and the upcoming high court campus on NH-44 to reach RGIA.
Previously, this line was proposed through the airport approach road from Mailardevpally to Lakshmiguda, Jalapalli and Mamidipally.
“We changed the alignment as there is a lot of activity on the Bengaluru highway. Around 5,000 flats are being constructed in this area,” said NVS Reddy, managing director of the Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML).
He added: “Over nine lakh passengers are expected to use the metro lines, of which the airport line is expected to have the highest activity, along with key areas such as Patancheru and Kokapet Neopolis.”
The MD said, “Phase 2 of the project will add six new corridors to Hyderabad’s existing metro network, covering a total distance of 116.2 km with 54 stations. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 32,237 crore, with the ‘Fourth City’ metro line alone pegged at Rs 8,000 crore.”
The six new corridors include the 36.6-km airport corridor from Nagole to RGIA, the 11.6-km Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis line, the 7.5-km Old City line from MGBS to Chandrayangutta, 13.4-km Miyapur to Patancheru line and the 7.1-km LB Nagar to Hayathnagar line. This will also involve the construction of both elevated and underground metro stations.
The Old City metro will require the widening of roads and the acquisition of around 1,100 properties. The 7.5 km line will pass over Darulshifa, Shalibanda, and Falaknuma.

Giving details of the airport metro line, officials said the project also involves construction of the longest ‘at-grade’ road-level metro rail line in India – 18-km stretch running between the Raviryal exit on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to the proposed Skill University.
The final detailed project report (DPR) of the plan will be submitted to the Telangana govt by the end of October.
Speaking about the ‘Fourth City’ metro, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) managing director NVS Reddy said the line from RGIA will go to Pedda Golconda, from where it will connect the ‘Fourth City’ along the ORR over Tukkuguda and Raviryal.
“The metro line will pass between the ORR and its service roads at ground level until the Future City,” he added.
Of the total 40-km stretch, two km will run underground within the airport area while 20 km will be elevated. The ‘At Grade’ (road level) line will be designed as a part of the new greenfield 300 feet road.
