PUNE: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has put around 21 building plans under scrutiny for not showing water source for property occupants in their proposals, PMRDA officials said on Wednesday.

PMRDA commissioner Rahul Mahiwal said they were evaluating all the proposals and conducting checks by sending teams to the project sites to check for the water sources. “While we have not cancelled any proposal, we are checking the water sources of all these projects thoroughly. A majority of the proposals is from the merged areas of PMRDA. The developers have to identify water sources like a borewell or allocation from the irrigation department or under the Jal Jeevan Mission,” he said.

PMRDA is assessing over 200 building proposals received by the authority over the last two months. The checks have been initiated following the directives from divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao.

The residents of these areas said PMRDA’s move was timely since property buyers were often forced to rely on builders for providing water or pay high charges for water tankers.

Sheena Thomas, a resident of Mulshi, said her society had three borewells, all of which have dried up. “The society is now dependent on water tankers all through the year. We have decided to shift out from the area as the high maintenance cost is getting unmanageable,” Thomas said.
