PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Police have booked four people for allegedly dumping construction material on their private land located on the bank of Pavana River.

The four landowners dumped the material on the bank of the river in the Rahatni area between March 23 and 27. The civic officials, after verifying the complaints received from citizens in this regard, lodged a complaint with the police.

This is the first case registered by the municipal corporation for illegal dumping in the current year. Last such case was registered in July 2023. A case under sections 271, 277, and 188 of the Indian Penal Code, along with sections 3 and 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, has been registered at the Wakad Police Station against four people, including a woman.

“The accused were found dumping the material on their land located along the Pawana River. As per existing laws, dumping on any land location around the river is prohibited. The prohibition is important as the land is identified as a flood line and it may cause flooding due to obstruction to the water flow,” sub-inspector Balaji Mane of the Wakad police station said.

The arrest is part of PCMC’s drive against illegal dumping on the riverbanks across the city.
