NOIDA: Groundwater is being extensively extracted through around 60 unauthorised borewells at the Amrapali Leisure Valley Society of Greater Noida West. While the AOA is in-charge of eight borewells meant to supply water to the entire society, more than 50 villas here also have borewells of their own.

These borewells are operating without the necessary permissions from the relevant authorities, officials said.

The groundwater department took note of the situation after receiving a complaint in the matter and issued a notice to the AOA. However, the AOA has failed to provide any response within the specified time, as such, the department is now planning to take stringent action against the AOA and other responsible individuals by imposing necessary fines, an official said.

Amrapali Leisure Valley Society consists of approximately 800 villas, around 700 of which are already handed over to the buyers. However, the project has not yet received its occupancy certificate (OC) or completion certificate (CC). The project’s construction work is being completed by NBCC, while the residents’ body is looking after the maintenance work within the society.

The residents’ body alleges that GNIDA has not provided a water connection to society yet.

“The builder had installed eight borewells in the society to supply water to the residents. However, no permission was obtained to install these borewells. During the summer months, the water from shared borewells alone was not sufficient, due to which several owners installed their own,” said Shishir Kumar, head of the AOA.

Ankita Rai, hydrologist with the ground water department, told TOI, “Following an investigation we issued two notices last month to the residents’ body. The second notice sought information regarding the number of villas with borewells. We can’t stop the water supply in the society so a fine will be imposed for the eight borewells. Apart from that all the other private borewells will be seized.”

Several residents have even claimed that borewells have been installed in more than 100 villas at the society.

Meanwhile, additional CEO of GNIDA Ashutosh Diwedi told TOI, “We cannot supply water to the societies which do not have OC/CC as it is not authorised.”
