BHOPAL: Union govt’s financial allocation for Bhopal’s metro rail project has reached its highest point in fiscal 2024-25, surpassing allocations of the previous four years.

Union ministry of housing and urban affairs has allocated Rs 882 crore for the current fiscal year, marking an increase of Rs 269 crore from the previous year, according to reports.

The cumulative Union govt allocation for Bhopal metro, including this year’s funds, stands at Rs 2239 crore. MPMRCL sources indicate that construction on the blue line, stretching from Ratnagiri to Bhadbhada, is scheduled to commence from Jan 2025.

The initial assessment in 2018 estimated the project cost for two metro lines at Rs 6941 crore, with a planned completion timeline of four years.

Experts suggest that delays in commercial operations, partially attributed to the pandemic, will result in substantial cost escalations.

MPMRCL anticipates commencing commercial operations on the route connecting Subhash Nagar depot to AIIMS Bhopal by July 2025.
