BELAGAVI: Belagavi Urban Development Authority (Buda) has started marking boundaries of its residential scheme No.61.

The scheme is being developed on 160 acres in Kanabargi area. The Buda is implementing a residential scheme after almost 11 years.

With the authorities expediting the work, the farmers, who are opposing the project, also have intensified their protests. Speaking to TOI, Buda commissioner Shakeel Mulla said, “Only 29 acres of the total project is under litigation as the farmers have approached court. However, of this, farmers who own 12 acres, have already given their consent. Thus, we have started implementing the project.”

According to the officer, if everything goes well, the site demarcation work would begin in February. Two months ago, the Buda had floated tenders to accord the work of demarcation of the layout. Last month, urban development minister Byrathi Suresh had stated that the work would start by the end of January.

Earlier, the government had proposed sharing of land on a 60:40 ratio with the farmers. After the farmers rejected the proposal, a 50:50 ratio was floated, and the majority of farmers accepted the proposal, except those in 29 acres. The farmers in around 15 acres have been opposing the project as they also have their houses on the land. However, according to Buda authorities, many of the buildings that came up in the notified land are unauthorised.

The project has been pending for the past many years. The farmers, who have given their consent for the project, are constantly putting pressure on the authorities to implement the project at the earliest.
