MADURAI : Chief minister M K Stalin on Friday inaugurated two apartment complexes in the city limits, one built under the housing for all scheme by Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) at Manjalmedu and another rental apartment complex for government employees built by Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) at K Pudur.
The three-storeyed (G+3) apartment complex in Manjalmedu, constructed under the housing for all scheme, cost a total of 37.3 crore. It is set to accommodate approximately 300 tenements and 20 economically weaker section (EWS) families, selected by the district administration. The 14 storeyed rental apartment complex in K Pudur built by TNHB at a total cost of around 60 crore has around 224 housing units.
According to the TNUHDB officials, the existing slums in Manjalmedu were demolished and the construction of the apartment complex which was started in October 2020 was delayed due to Covid lockdown and fund crunch. A senior TNUHD official said that each house costs 11.64 lakh, with significant subsidies from both the state and central govts. The state govt has committed 9 lakh as subsidy, while the central govt will contribute 1.64 lakh.
The remaining amount, 1 lakh, is to be borne by the beneficiary. These houses, spanning approximately 400sqft, include a bedroom, hall, kitchen and toilet, ensuring basic amenities for the residents.
A senior official said that in August 2023, the foundation stone for an apartment complex in Subramaniyapuram, consisting of 396 houses, was laid by the IT minister. “This project, spanning 1.43 acres of land, comes at a total cost of 62.7 crore. Each house in this project is priced at 15.8 lakh and is expected to be completed within the next 18 months. Upon completion, TNUHDB would have initiated nine projects in Madurai, boasting a total capacity of around 4,000 houses,” added the official.
After the inauguration, district collector M S Sangeetha and mayor Indrani Ponvasanth handed over the residential order certificate to the beneficiaries in a function held at the district collectorate.
Among the diverse suggestions received from industrial bodies such as MADITSSIA and the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, include an extension of the suggestion period from 40 days to two months.
