LUCKNOW: Development activities across 51 cities in Uttar Pradesh would be governed by a new master plan based on geographic information system (GIS) in the upcoming financial year.

The housing department on Monday sought the status of the GIS-based master plans being readied by the concerned regulatory authorities.

In UP, a total of 59 cities have to be developed in a planned manner out of which the GIS master plan of eight cities has been approved by the government for implementation last year. Among the remaining ones, the plans of 28 cities are in final stages of scrutiny while that of 23 ones are being outlined. Crucial to efficient management of land banks, the master plan provides information on the exact use of a land parcel within a regulated area. A senior officer from the department said that master plans of the 28 cities are going to be put up for final approval after the review within a fortnight while that of the remaining 23 cities would be finalised before March 31. Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Prayagraj are three key cities which are yet to finalise their master plans. The plan of Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Ayodhya, Aligarh, Mathura, Azamgarh and Orai has been approved.

The plan for Lucknow has been put on hold for now as a revised framework would have to be prepared once the UP state capital region (SCR) is notified by the state government with Lucknow city at its core.

The regulatory authorities of key cities have been asked to prominently earmark roads having width of 24 metre or more, show the alignment of the ring road needed in the future and greenbelt spread over 5 hectares or more in the master plan.

Additional chief secretary of the housing department Nitin Ramesh Gokarn said that the chief town and country planner will have to provide his feedback before the plans are put up for approval before the state.
