GURUGRAM: A special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be created to take on the expansion of the metro project in the city, and it will likely be called Gurugram Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), officials said. The entity will have its own board members apart from representations from the Centre.

According to state government sources, the central government is providing financial assistance for the proposed metro expansion plan and to have equity in the project, it was required to create a new separate entity with its own account book.

“A separate entity will be formed for the construction of the metro rail project in the city, since it could not be implemented under HMRTC which is responsible for implementing metro projects across the state. Both the government of India and Haryana government are stakeholders, and with the formation of GMRC, it will be exclusive for the Gurgaon metro rail project,” the official said.

In June this year, Union cabinet approved metro connectivity from HUDA City Centre to Cyber City, covering a distance of over 28km and having 27 stations at an estimated cost of around Rs 5,452 crore. However, the construction work is yet to commence. According to the officials, the delay is due to the fact that the design is not yet finalised. The HMRTC has invited bids for detailed design consultants.

The estimated date of completion is four years from the date of sanction and the project is expected to seamlessly connect old and new Gurgaon. The metro route will include Sector 45, Cyber Park, Sector 46, Sector 47, Sector 48, Technology Park, Udyog Vihar Phase 6, Sector 10, Sector 37, Basai, Sector 9, Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Krishna Chowk, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23 A, Sector 22, Udyog Vihar Phase 4, and CyberHub.

The daily ridership is estimated to be around 5,34,000 in 2026, and rise to around 7,26,000 by 2031. Moreover, the number is expected to rise to around 8,81,000-10,70,000 by 2051. The Gurgaon metro will have a design speed of 80kmph, while the average speed will be 34kmph.
