PORVORIM: To ensure verification migrants’ details staying on rent in the state govt will introduce The Goa Verification of the Tenant Bill 2024 in the next session of the Goa legislative assembly, said chief minister Pramod Sawant. He said that stringent clauses, including fines will be introduced to deter property owners for not verifying tenant details.

Sawant said that the draft bill is under examination.

“In the coming assembly session we will introduce the bill. We will have clauses so that people have a little fear about being arrested and being fined Rs10,000,” said Sawant. He was responding to a private members’ resolution moved by Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco.

Lourenco said that govt has to enact a legislation which would make it mandatory for landlords and property owners to submit details of their tenants for police verification. “It is necessary and mandatory that all should verify tenants. Both the district collectors and owners of the property should be held responsible. If it is not done we should penalise them,” said Lourenco.

During the discussion on the resolution, several MLAs agreed that a legislation to rein in crime by tenants is mandatory. They said that verification of tenants will help keep a check on those coming into the state. They also called for fines to be imposed on those who do not complete the verification process.
