SILCHAR: The deadlock in the land purchase and sale deed registration processes in all sub-registrar’s offices, including the Sadar sub-registry office in Cachar district, has plunged the public into a quagmire of hardships.

The situation, exacerbated by the absence of deputy registrars and sub-registrars in recent months, has now taken a new turn of distress as the clearance for land transactions from the district commissioner’s office faces delays, exacerbating the already cumbersome registration process.

“Mountains of files are accumulating in sub-registrar offices, indicating the backlog caused by slow processes and bureaucratic hurdles. Rural residents, often reliant on land sales to meet urgent financial needs like medical expenses and wedding costs, find themselves ensnared in a labyrinth of administrative red tape,” said a deed writer here on Saturday.

Even after obtaining the necessary clearance, errors in the online document uploading system at the registration office further impede the registration process, leaving families in dire straits, he added.

Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, in a plea to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has highlighted the urgent need for intervention to alleviate the suffering of stakeholders. She emphasised that beyond inconveniencing the public, the stagnation in land transactions is depriving the state govt of vital revenue.

“As families grapple with delayed land registrations, critical life events like weddings and medical treatments hang in precarious balance, underscoring the urgency of resolving the bureaucratic logjam in Cachar district’s land registration process,” she said in the letter emailed to the chief minister.
