MUMBAI | THANE: Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, who also holds the urban development (UD) portfolio, said on Saturday that the Metro 3 from BKC to Worli will start within the next 100 days.
Shinde made the announcement after a review meeting of the MMRDA, UD, and Housing departments by CM Devendra Fadnavis. CM Fadnavis instructed officials to make a fresh schedule for the completion of all metro works in the MMRDA area.
CM Fadnavis emphasised that there should be no delay in these works, and at least 50 km of metro should be operational every year from next year onwards.
Shinde mentioned that the MMRDA’s pod taxi project was also reviewed and it will provide relief to commuters in BKC along with the Thane-Borivli tunnel and help decongest the Eastern Express Highway.
Fadnavis said, “Metros are being started in many places without car sheds, so do not wait for that to start. Study such experiments that are being done in the world. Review what temporary alternative arrangements are there. Review all possible future metro projects and reserve space for car sheds for it now. Plan for 50 km of metro to be started every year from next year. At least 23 km of metro will be started this year. Also, Metro-3 will add 20 to 25 km to it.”
The 10-station stretch of the Aqua Line, which spans from BKC to Aarey, includes nine underground stations and was constructed at a cost of Rs 14,120 crore. The entire Metro Line 3 project is expected to ease traffic and provide a critical transportation link between Mumbai’s city centre and suburbs. Mumbai Metro Line 3 will run from Navy Nagar in the far south of Mumbai to Aarey Depot in the north-centre and will include connections to other metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and Mumbai’s International Airport. According to officials, the entire 33.5-km Metro 3 corridor will cater to 1.3 million riders per day after it is fully operational.
Meanwhile, Shinde while spoking at a business conclave in Thane on Saturday evening, said the state govt is committed to realising the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform Mumbai into a fintech powerhouse in the coming years.
