MANGALURU: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is set to adopt a new building bylaw that makes provisions for stringent actions against violations and aims at clearing hindrances to the sustainable development of the city.

A draft of the bylaw sent to the govt was returned to the city corporation for further changes. The pros and cons of the modified building bylaw will be discussed at the first council meeting of mayor Manoj Kumar to be held on Nov 28, said MCC Council chief whip Premanand Shetty.

“A committee was formed to create a new building bylaw, and a draft with modifications to the existing one was also prepared. However, the govt sought necessary amendments to it. The amended bylaw will be discussed in the council before submitting the same to the govt,” he said.

The urban development department notified a model draft building bylaw applicable to all city corporations in 2017. Following this, a council meeting of the MCC held on Jan 31, 2018, referred a draft bylaw to the standing committee on town planning. Later, the standing committee submitted a recommendation with a modified bylaw to the council on Aug 13, 2020, Shetty said.

The MCC submitted a revised bylaw to the govt for approval on Sept 14, 2023. However, on June 27, 2024, the urban development department directed the MCC to review the draft and submit the same with suggestions to the govt, he said, adding that an agenda in this regard will be discussed at the upcoming council meeting of the MCC.

Corporator Naveen D’Souza said that the new bylaw is essential in the changing scenario. “The new building bylaw is expected to check violations in all types of constructions, including commercial and residential complexes. Further, the bylaw will also have a set of guidelines for builders to follow,” he said.
