PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) drive to cut water connections of housing societies over non-functional STPs has been put on hold after residents objected to the interruption in supply.

The civic body had issued warnings to 41 societies over non-functional sewage treatment plants (STPs) and warned of action from December 11.

Several housing societies had claimed that the builders had not provided functional STPs to them at the time of handover.

“PCMC officials had come to cut the water supply to our society. We informed them that our STP plant is not operational because its panel is damaged. We asked the civic officials to give us some time to get the STP functional as MSEDCL officials are already working to fix it,” Ranjeet Magdum, the chairman of Alpine Aura Society in Moshi, said. The society has 247 flats.

“The builder of our project had made provision of STP for only two out of the four wings. However, it still got the completion certificate from PCMC,” Magdum claimed.

As many as 80 housing societies of the total 335 residential complexes in the PCMC jurisdiction had non-functional STPs. PCMC’s first notice earlier this year to these societies pushed many to get their STPs functional. At present, only 41 are on the list of defaulters.

“Only five of the 41 societies have informed us that the builder of the project gave them non-functional STPs. Hence, we are sending notices to builders concerned and have put action on hold against these five societies until we hear from the builders as well as the residents,” an official from the PCMC’s environment department said.

“Some of these societies have requested additional time. We have decided to put our action on hold for eight to 10 days. We will initiate action after the end of the extended period,” he added.
