DEHRADUN: Dehradun police carried out a verification drive across the city on Sunday and collected a fine of Rs 1 crore from 1,015 landlords for failing to get their tenants’ verification done as per legal provisions.

The action was taken as part of the police’s preparations for the upcoming general elections.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Dehradun, Ajai Singh, informed that during the drive, 278 people failed to produce any valid documents to support their verification. “They were brought to the nearby police stations for questioning, during which 154 were fined a total of Rs 48,750 for failing to give satisfactory replies to the queries,” he said.

“Overall, during the six-hour-long drive, police collected information about 6,372 people, including tenants, workers, housemaids, and some suspected individuals,” added Singh.

“Police also seized 17 vehicles after seeing them parked suspiciously. The drive will continue in the future as well to ensure peaceful polls in the district,” the SSP further said.
