Residents oppose huge PAP project at Kanjurmarg, Real Estate News, ET RealEstate

MUMBAI: Close to 4,000 residents of four buildings in Kanjurmarg have opposed a huge project planned by BMC to house project-affected persons (PAP) from its ambitious Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) in the area.

The BMC has planned two 23-storey buildings with seven wings to rehabilitate PAPs, including those displaced by the GMLR project. The amenity plot off LBS Marg will also have a three-storey civic market where displaced commercial establishments will be re-settled and a one-storey community hall. When TOI visited the site last week, it found work has begun on the Rs 189-crore project.

The residents argue such a mega project would put a burden on existing infrastructure in the area and the BMC must consider the need for a playground as the area lacks one.

Snehal Basrur, from the Great Eastern Gardens housing society and a member the Kanjur-Bhandup Clean ALM, has met BMC administrator I S Chahal and local MP Manoj Kotak with others to push their case. Basrur said they understand the urgency about PAP tenements, but the Kanjur proposal in D needs to be revoked. “In Mulund, a huge amenity plot has been handed over to BMC, specifically for PAP rehabilitation. It is large enough for 3,000 tenements and can easily accommodate all the PAPs from GMLR as not many families are being displaced,” said Basrur.

Another resident Uma Srinivas, present at the meeting with the BMC chief in May, said it was a positive discussion and they had hoped the Kanjur project had been stalled. They are upping the ante after finding out work is progressing.

The BMC said the residents are too late; the work order has been issued and work too has started. An officer TOI spoke to said the residents should have submitted their objection when D was being published.
