KOTTAYAM: The field survey related to the social impact assessment (SIA) of land acquisition for the construction of the proposed Sabarimala Greenfield airport, spread across Manimala and Erumely panchayats in Kottayam, has been completed. Efforts are underway to submit the draft report to the district collector by Nov 15.

A 15-member team from the social work department of Bharat Mata College, Thirkkakkara, conducted the survey for the SIA from Oct 9. The new independent agency conducted the survey after the earlier SIA conducted by the Centre for Management Development was cancelled following a court directive.

Around 1,039.876 hectares of land spread across Manimala and Erumeli Thekku villages need to be acquired for the construction of the airport. This includes 916.27ha of land in Cheruvalli estate and 121.876ha of private land.

The construction will affect 221 families in Cheruvally estate and 362 families outside the estate. The survey team members visited these families as part of preparing the SIA. The project will affect 1,441 residents and 875 plantation workers.

After the draft report is published, an adalat for those families whose land will be acquired will be held. The views and suggestions of those people will be included in the final draft report. This report will also be published for the public. An expert committee will then examine the report before submitting a report including their suggestions to the govt.
