PUNE: The slum rehabilitation in Pune and nearby areas will gather pace as new guidelines have made it easy to hunt spaces for the projects.
According to the new guidelines, slums can now be rehabilitated within 5 km from the periphery of the slum. According to the old guidelines, it was restricted to within 2 km only.
According to activists, issues like corruption are also creating big hurdles in the redevelopment of slums. Even after the announcement of the new guidelines, many Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects are stuck due to improper execution.
“The new rule will give some relief to the authority. Pending projects can gather momentum now,” said Nilesh Gatne, the CEO of the SRA.
The SRA had given notices to 20 developers for delaying slum rehabilitation projects. According to officials, most of these projects were delayed for around five years. The SRA has 46 projects pending under its jurisdiction.
According to the authority’s data, 61 projects have been completed under its jurisdiction, which includes Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
The guidelines have also extended the time frame to complete the projects. These guidelines have given powers to the SRA to impose penalties or withdraw projects from developers who fail to finish the project in the given time frame.
