COIMBATORE: The state govt is all set to release the final masterplan for Coimbatore in May 2025. The draft masterplan was published in 2024 and received over 3,000 suggestions from various stakeholders. Based on these inputs, modifications are being incorporated into the final plan. Additionally, the govt is set to prepare two separate masterplans for the Mettupalayam and Pollachi municipality areas.
The draft masterplan for Coimbatore was released in February 2024. “After perusing all the suggestions, important suggestions will be added, and some changes will be made in the draft masterplan. We are expecting that all the changes will be completed and the final masterplan for Coimbatore will be ready very soon,” district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar said.
According to sources from the Local Planning Authority (LPA), Coimbatore, the final masterplan will be ready within 15 days. “Chief minister M K Stalin is likely to release the final masterplan for Coimbatore in April or May 2025. The masterplan is prepared keeping in mind the development of Coimbatore in 2041,” said an official.
He also added that this will be the second final masterplan for Coimbatore, and it will be published on the Directorate of Town and Country Plan’s website.
K Kathirmathiyon, secretary, Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the second masterplan is being released after three decades.
“The bureaucrats thought that some industrial organisation’s representation is sufficient for altering the masterplan, and a common man does not know what a masterplan is. The officials failed to get suggestions from area-wise in Coimbatore. After releasing the final masterplan, there are chances that many suggestions will be received from the public. So, the state govt should modify it in the future,” said Kathirmathiyon.
The Local Planning Authority (LPA) released a masterplan for Pollachi in 2005 and another masterplan for Mettupalayam in 2006. The second masterplans for the two municipalities are under preparation. The masterplans focus on mission components such as water supply, sewerage and septage management, water body rejuvenation, and green spaces. The primary focus of the mission is on water supply, followed by sewerage.
A geographic information system (GIS) based master plans are being prepared for Class-II towns with populations ranging from 50,000 to 99,999.
