KALYAN: Amid the KDMC decision to demolish 65 buildings in Dombivli following a Bombay High Court order, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has come forward in defence of the residents of these buildings. He said, “If necessary, the state govt will go to the Supreme Court to protect genuine flat buyers.”
The CM said he was apprised of the situation by local MLA and BJP executive president Ravindra Chavan.
“I have instructed the police to take action against the builder. Some of the buildings are on govt land, and the issue is how to regularise them. Where the rules were broken and construction done, we may look at relaxing the rules. I have taken complete information on the genuine buyers, and our efforts will be to protect them,” he said.
Meanwhile, KDMC commissioner Dr Indurani Jakhar said residents of the building can move Supreme Court, but they will continue the proceedings as per the court order. When Jakhar was asked whether any local municipal officer or employee was involved in illegal construction on such a large scale, she said Thane police’s economic offences wing (EOW) is investigating the matter. If the police find any KDMC employee’s involvement in the probe, action will be taken against them.
Jakhar also said that she sought information about this from the Thane police commissioner.
Residents of the building have heaved a sigh of relief to some extent due to the chief minister’s assurance. However, the residents said they received a notice from the local police that, as per the high court order, KDMC would demolish their buildings. KDMC has asked the building residents to cooperate during the action and also warned that if they try to create any disturbance during the action, legal action will be taken against them.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Dipesh Mhatre, along with affected building residents, met Jakhar and requested her to not take any action until SSC and HSC exams are over as several students who live in these buildings are appearing for them.
A resident said after the chief minister’s statement, they hope that some solution is found and the homes of thousands like them are saved.
The scam unravelled in 2022 when architect Sandeep Patil discovered that some builders were selling flats in illegal buildings by forging RERA certificates. Patil first complained to the KDMC, but when the civic body did not act, he approached Bombay High Court. KDMC then found that these builders prepared fake documents of building plans.
