CHANDIGARH: Taking serious note of property tax dues, the Chandigarh municipal corporation on Friday sealed five commercial properties in Burail. These commercial properties include shops and a hotel.

The sealing exercise was carried out after tax defaulters did not clear dues even after getting recovery notices and sealing notices.

On MC’s request, the DC appointed naib tehsildar at the estate office Makhan Ram as duty magistrate and the entire proceeding was done under his presence on Friday.

“More properties which owe tax have been identified and action will be taken against them too,” sources in the MC revealed.

Income from property tax is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the Municipal Corporation. For the next financial year, starting from April 1, the civic body has kept the target of Rs 92 crore from property tax returns.

The MC had given two-month rebate period — April and May — in the current financial year to taxpayers to avail the rebate facility. During this period, the authority had given 20% rebate on residential properties and 10% rebate on commercial properties. After the rebate period, the defaulters of the property tax had to pay 25% penalty over the entire property tax amount.
