TRICHY: Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB), formerly Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, has decided to demolish a 40-year-old weak residential building at Marsingpet in Trichy city and build a new one there.

This comes in the wake of people complaining to Trichy corporation about the perilous state of the building. Mayor Mu Anbalagan on Tuesday inspected the property and suggested to TNUHDB officials to prepare an estimate for the new building.

The building near Bhima Nagar falling under ward 52 in zone IV was commissioned in 1984. On finding its structure weak, TNUHDB had instructed the inhabitants to vacate the property in 2022.

With four families still residing there, the mayor told TNUHDB to take steps to disconnect power supply to the building so that they vacate. Since all the inhabitants of the building were from economically backward families, he urged TNUHDB to expedite preliminary work for demolishing the existing structure and constructing the new building.

“A proposal has been prepared to develop a ground + 3 floor residential building with 84 dwelling units. Once administrative sanction is obtained, we will demolish the weak structure and launch work for the replacement building,” a TNUHDB official said. Work on the new building is expected to commence in six months, and existing beneficiaries will be allotted houses. Trichy corporation has promised to provide support in facilitating all basic amenities for the proposed building.
