HYDERABAD: The double-bedroom houses left incomplete by the previous BRS govt may be brought under the ambit of the Indiramma housing scheme and allotted to poor not having land.

The Congress govt has decided to finish the construction of the incomplete 2-BHK units and allot them, along with those completed but lying vacant, in all nearly a lakh 2-BHK units, to eligible landless poor.

District collectors were directed to identify the 2-BHK units which were completed and those incomplete, and prepare a list of beneficiaries of landless poor, along with the eligible poor who have land and would be covered under the first phase of the Indiramma housing scheme being launched from Jan 26.

Officials said a survey was conducted on the directions by chief minister A Revanth Reddy. The survey found that of the 2,92,938 2-BHKs sanctioned by the previous BRS govt in the state, 1,54,389 were completed. While 41,925 houses reached the final stages of construction, the construction of 34,022 houses was stopped midway. The construction of 62,602 2-BHKs did not begin at all, and the state govt decided to cancel 62,600 2-BHKs that were sanctioned but not constructed by the previous govt during its tenure.

The condition of many of these nits turned from bad to worse as the units suffered structural damage due to water seepage during rains. Though some of the units were allotted to beneficiaries selected through a draw of lots, they remain unoccupied due to bad condition.

There are allegations that the previous govt expedited the allotment of these 2-BHK units with the 2023 election fast approaching then, without essential amenities, resulting in rejection by a majority of beneficiaries. Also, several contractors abandoned their work midway due to non-payment of bills by the previous govt.
