INDORE: In a move to reclaim public space, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Wednesday carried out a demolition drive at Retimandi Chowk and demolished more than 50 commercial and residential structures that were allegedly erected illegally.
According to IMC additional commissioner Rohit Sisonia, the action, following the directives of IMC Commissioner Shivam Verma, was initiated in the Retimandi area located within IDA Scheme No. 97 Part 4.
“Approximately 40 permanent shops, 15 temporary stalls, 5 houses, and 3 dhabas were demolished during the drive. A total of eight earthmoving machines were deployed to carry out the demolition,” he said. This action is part of the ongoing efforts by the IMC to remove encroachments and restore public spaces that belong to Indore Development Authority (IDA). The demolition at Retimandi Chowk is expected to improve traffic flow and pedestrian movement in the area.
During the drive, some people protested and sought time to remove the encroachment on their own, but to no avail. The IMC officials claimed that all the encroachers were served notices well in advance to vacate the place, but they ignored them, prompting the IMC to take action.
