KANPUR: Both UP Metro rail corporation (UPMRC) and National Capital Region transport corporation (NCRTC) are set to roll out full-fledged Metro corridors of Kanpur and Meerut in 2024-25.
With 23.8 km long tracks connecting 21 stations from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta, the North-South corridor is expected to cater to around 1.5 lakh commuters daily, while another 23 km North-South corridor from Modipuram to Meerut South in Meerut district is expected to register around 70,000 to one lakh footfall.
Meerut Metro will run along RapidX on the same track. The deadline for Meerut Metro is June 2025, but NCRTC expects to complete the project by March 2025.
Meerut Metro will have 13 stations including Meerut South, Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmpuri, Meerut central, Bhainsali, Begumpul, MES colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram and Modipuram depot.
“While Meerut central, Bhainsali and Begumpul stations are underground, other stations are elevated. Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram stations will have RapidX service where the Namo Bharat train will halt. But for Metro services on 13 stations, NCRTC will introduce separate Metro trains. The synchronisation of the two services will be such that after every two Metro trains, one Namo Bharat train will halt,” said Punnet Vats, CPRO of NCRTC.
On Monday, state finance minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said that the UP govt has allocated Rs 914 crore for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). He added that govt has allocated Rs 395 crore for Kanpur Metro.
UPMRC PRO told TOI, “The first corridor of Kanpur Metro is expected to be commissioned by Nov 2024.”
“The first corridor of 23.8 km will have 14 elevated stations and seven underground. Once the entire corridor is commissioned, it will revolutionise the urban transportation landscape in Kanpur, providing commuters with a modern, efficient and comfortable mode of travel,” said the UPMRC official.
The second corridor of Kanpur Metro from Agriculture University to Barra with eight stations will be commissioned by Dec 2025.
